Snow Bunting. Sept 15th:
Undoubtedly the highlight of an otherwise quiet day was a
Swainson’s
Thrush discovered in the garden at
Lower Stoneybreck. Although the underwing was clearly black and white, the birds
whereabouts shortly after its discovery wasn’t and after originally being seen
superbly (by just one lucky tour guide!) it quickly disappeared. Despite a
thorough search of the island it wasn’t seen again but with winds strengthening
it looks unlikely that the bird will leave so hopefully it will be relocated
tomorrow. A Merlin was the only new raptor. Waders included a single Little
Stint, Curlew Sandpiper, 2 Ruff and Jack Snipe. Passerines included 13 Tree

A bit of a wash-out today low cloud and drizzle this morning followed
with heavy rain all afternoon. The
Pectoral Sandpiper was found bathing in
the middle of the road near the school and the
Little Stint visited the new Obs
Pools, whilst the Curlew Sandpiper
remained faithful to Buness. A Sand
Martin was new as were the first
Pink-footed Geese (12) of the autumn and there were 21
Siskin. Other news: The 2008
Citril Finch has been accepted by BOURC onto
Category A of the British List as the first record for Britain. Sept 12th:
The best birds of the day included a
Pectoral Sandpiper
at Da Water and Little Stint together with Curlew Sandpiper on Buness.

Bird of the day went straight through and was therefore only seen by one
lucky soul – a Common Buzzard. Seven Kestrels, three Sparrowhawks and the two
resident Peregrines made up the rest of the raptor count. Wildfowl comprised 25
Wigeon, 41 Teal and two Tufted Duck. Three each of Ruff and
Common Sandpiper were the pick of the waders. Passerine counts included;

Lapland Bunting. Sept 6th:
The water and shore produced 13 Teal, 7 Wigeon, 13 Grey Heron, 13 Oystercatcher
and 34 Ringed Plover. Inland were 300 Meadow Pipit, 4 Common Redstart, 3
Whinchat, 2 Fieldfare, Song Thrush, Reed warbler, 2 Barred Warbler, 15 Willow
Warbler, 2 Spotted Flycatcher, Pied Flycatcher, 240 Twite, 2 Common Rosefinch
and 90 Lapland Bunting. Sept 5th:
Male Sparrowhawk, 2 Peregrine and 3 Kestrel terrorised the few migrants on show
– 2 Common Sandpiper, 2 Tree Pipit, Black Redstart, 3 Common Redstart, 8 Willow
Warbler, 7 Common Rosefinch and 90 Lapland Bunting. Sept 4th:
Some movement including 17 Cormorant, 10 Grey Heron, 30 Ringed Plover,
Short-eared Owl, 2 Tree Pipit, 2 Common Redstart, a Marsh Warbler, 4 Barred
Warbler, first Blackcap, 6 Garden Warbler, 24 Willow Warbler, the month’s first
Spotted and Pied Flycatchers, 210 Twite, 6 Common Rosefinch and 140 Lapland
Bunting. The Shoveler that arrived on 30th August was last seen
today. Sept 3rd:
Totals of 15 Teal, 12 Cormorant, 34 Ringed Plover, 250 Meadow Pipit
swamped the lone Tree Pipit, 3 Barred Warbler, 17 Willow warbler, 5 Common
Rosefinch and 110 Lapland Bunting. Sept 2nd:
Highlights of Wryneck, 3 Barred Warbler, 17 Willow Warbler, 5 Common
Rosefinch, the Arctic Warbler but just 140
Lapland Buntings today! Sept 1st:
First Slavonian Grebe of the autumn, yesterday’s Arctic
Warbler still present, Marsh Warbler, Icterine Warbler and 3 Barred
Warblers plus a scattering of common warblers (16 Willow, 6 Garden, 4 Lesser
Whitethroat), 2 Common Crossbill and 7 Common Rosefinch. Main highlight however
was the invasion of Lapland Buntings – with an incredible record total of 185
